The Leaflet – April 2022

Dear Friend,

Spring is in the air! Buds and birds are in the park and bright blooms are filling the conservatory.

The Spring Floral Show continues in the temperate house with new bulbs being added each week and beautiful hydrangeas on display (scroll down to the What’s In Bloom article to learn more). It’s a feast for the senses – especially the eyes and nose! The conservatory is back to regular hours, 10am-5pm daily. Wearing a mask is encouraged, but not required at this time. Just don’t forget that during preparation for renovation to the Palm House, the conservatory entrance is at the rear (Jarvis side) of the glasshouses by the Children’s Conservatory or through the Orchid House.

There have been some comings and some goings. We have been lucky enough to welcome Matt Canaran onto our team as a Project Manager on our Growing with the City Program. Matt joins the team having just completed his Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture at the University of Guelph. We’ve wished Curtis Evoy, Supervisor of Conservatories for the City of Toronto, and a beloved friend of Allan Gardens, a happy retirement. We will miss Curtis for his capacity, tenacity, and artistic touch, and we wish him all the best in his next adventure. The Toronto Star recently shed some light on the incredible work of this truly wonderful person. See you around, Curtis!

The Growing with the City Program, an update to our 2017 Refresh study, is underway. We are working to prioritize our stewardship efforts and have completed a study with The Planning Partnership, which will serve to underpin efforts moving forward.

Last Sunday, we hosted a successful Earth Day Park Clean-up and we are looking forward to our highly anticipated Spring Plant Sale and Seed Giveaway on May 15th. You’ll find all the details of that special event and Sunday in the Park below in the ‘What’s On’ section of this email. We hope you will find a reason to come and spend some time in the park!

Read on to learn more about upcoming events, our volunteers, and what’s blooming at Allan Gardens.

As always, if you have any suggestions or comments, please send them to us at info@friendsofallangardens.ca. We always welcome ideas from the community!

Thank you for your continued support and we’ll see you in the gardens!
