Volunteer Spotlight: Helene St. Jacques

FOAG takes great pride in our diverse, talented, and expanding volunteer team. We could not achieve our goals without volunteers and we appreciate each and every person who donates their time.

This month, our Volunteer Spotlight shines a light on Helene St. Jacques, who contributes her talents to Allan Gardens through working in the edible garden, running special events, and helping with grant writing. Thank you, Helene, for all that you do!

Why did you volunteer with the Friends of Allan Gardens?

I joined as soon as I learned that FOAG offered ‘hands-on’ opportunities to work with plants. The original link was through my volunteer work with Green Thumbs Growing Kids Toronto, the school gardening program that accesses the Children’s Conservatory.

What types of work have you been involved in when volunteering?

I’ve lent a hand doing a number of things including a hilarious moment stuffing moss into Christmas topiary reindeer with Curtis, the past Park Supervisor, gently leading the way.

Since I joined the volunteer team, there have been many different tasks on offer that either used my skills, stretched them, or were completely new. There’s never any pressure – l simply try to fill in where I’m needed.

What do you like most about volunteering with the Friends of Allan Gardens?

It’s about the two P’s – people and plants! I grew up spending the summer in the garden – my father was dedicated to growing food for the family and flowers to impress the neighbours.

l’ve learned so much from FOAG staff Diana and Derek, and enjoy the camaraderie of others – particularly those who share the goal of growing food for the community in Edible Allan Gardens.

What motivates you to give back to Allan Gardens park and conservatory?

The simple pleasures of working with and being around plants exotic and common, edible and non-edible!
